THE STORIES WE TELL OURSELVES

This weekend in our teacher training program we discussed the stories we tell ourselves, about ourselves, that tend to hold us back. We all have them (perhaps more than one) going on in the background. At their essence, these personal narratives finish the sentence – “I’m not good enough because…”.

If we decide to face these limiting self beliefs face on, we get curious about our reactive thoughts, emotions and actions – what we think, feel and do when we feel small and at our most vulnerable. In observing our conditioning we also recognise the gifts that can stem from a sense of feeling less than. For example, developing increased levels of empathy or personal drive.

One of the joys of any meditation practice is the epiphany that we are not our thoughts, nor do we have to believe them to be true. When we begin to realise we all have the right to show up fully and unreservedly in the world, can can truly begin to share our unique gifts with others. How beautiful is that?

One quote…

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?’ Actually who are you not to be? Your playing small does not serve the world. We were all meant to shine, as children do. And as we let our light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

Marianne Williamson

One question…

What do you tell yourself when you are playing small?
