WHEN LIFE DOESN'T ADD UP

I was inspired by our teacher Mia to unearth my thumbed out copy of Consolations this week and revisit the poetry of David Whyte. He is an incredible poet, unpacking the sticky parts of being human and giving voice to some of the universal yet often unshared aspects of life. Mia read one of his poems (part of which is quoted below) in her IGTV class this week and it reminded me what a powerful lifeline words can be when it feels like you’re struggling on your own.

When something is sitting heavy on the heart, it can be very healing to hear your experience articulated by someone else. Words can help you feel you are not alone and make way for a deeper sense of belonging.

One quote…

Solace is the spacious, imaginative home we make where disappointment goes to be welcomed and rehabilitated. When life does not in any way add up, we must turn to the part of us that has never wanted a life of simple calculation.

Solace, David Whyte

One question…

When life doesn’t add up, where do you seek solace? What words of comfort could you offer someone else today?
