A LEGACY OF TOGETHERNESS

There’s been a lot said about connection over the course of this pandemic. Separated from our usual networks, many of us are experiencing a sense of isolation or loneliness. We are missing our family and friends, our usual haunts and our yoga studios. For those of us in Melbourne, perhaps more sharply than others. But in some way or another, we are all yearning for a connection not available to us right now.

While we can’t ‘fix’ the aloneness we might feel, it can be helpful to remind ourselves how interconnected we all are, even when we are physically apart. Whether we realise it or not we are all held together in an ecology that extends beyond time and space.

Next time you have a quiet moment, or are feeling the pang of loneliness, try this exercise from meditation teacher, Sharon Salzberg. Pause and consider all the people that are with you in this present moment. Not physically but in the sense of having shaped you into the very person you are right now. Friends and family who have supported you. Teachers and leaders who have inspired you and challenged you. Authors of incredible books you have read. You are a collection of all the conversations, interactions and experiences that have brought you to the present moment and are never ever - not even once - alone, even when you feel like you are.

Perhaps this sounds a little woo woo or saccharine but maybe it can help you to connect to the legacy of togetherness we are all beneficiaries of. You might even consider the myriad of people you have (even unknowingly) touched, shaped and inspired along the way and lean into that warm feeling of connection.

One quote…

We are because we belong.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu

One question…

Who do you carry with you, always?
