A ROAR OF JOY
Mantra is a powerful sound or vibration that we use to enter a state of meditation. When we chant, we give our busy mind something to focus on as well as deepening our exhalation, which supports a state of calm and relaxation.
The most well known mantra in yoga is OM. This single syllable has a long history and is said to be the sound of the universe creating itself. The explanation I have found most useful is that OM means “yes.” It is the sound of life affirming itself over and over in joyful expansion.
Sound is powerful. Next time you have the opportunity to chant OM, sense into the way it feels in your body. Chanting OM sends vibrations all through the chest, skull and mouth. Perhaps you can feel it as the energy of “yes”.
One quote…
Although we tend to think of OM as being peaceful, don’t forget the definition: a roar of joy. When people are relaxed and at ease and expressing joy, they say things like, “Oh yeah! Hell yeah! Amen! Ahhhh-men! Hallelujah! Here is a fun exercise: Listen to twenty thousand people at a sports event, roaring at some play on the field. Hear it as a form of OM.

One question…
What does “yes” feel like in your body?
